Today, in the premises of Municipal Assembly in Peja, Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) has organized a debate on the level of implementation of external audit recommendations by the Municipality of Peja. Present in this debate were: Mayor of Municipality of Peja Mr. Gazmend Muhaxheri, Deputy Auditor General of Kosovo, Mr. Ilir Salihu, municipal advisors of Peja and representatives of civil society from Municipality of Peja.
Deputy Auditor General of Kosovo, Mr. Ilir Salihu, has congratulated BIRN for organizing such meeting and stressed that implementation of audit recommendations helps local and central governance in taking right decisions. Mr. Salihu added that the role of National Audit Office of Kosovo is to serve Kosovo citizens, by increasing the transparency on the manner of management of public finances, and by advising the Assembly how to hold the Government accountable.
While, the Mayor of Municipality of Peja, Mr.Gazmend Muhaxheri, stated that his Municipality has made important progress in implementation of audit recommendations of previous years, and expressed his commitment that the situation will be even better with implementation of recommendations given in the last audit report. He said that an important indicator which proves this progress are assessments which are performed by various donors who have assessed municipal governance in many indicators related with audit recommendations and, as the result of this performance, Municipality of Peja has received additional grants.
Today’s debate was preceded by an analysis of external audit reports for four last years of Municipality of Peja, which was presented by Mr. Visar Prebreza, editor of newspaper “Jeta në Kosovë”. He stated that the aim of analysis is to see the trend where the process is going to and to what extent are implemented audit recommendations.
Debate about implementation of audit recommendations will continue in the following days, in other Kosovo municipalities as well.
